RHODODENDRON-FOREST-PARK LINSWEGE-PETERSFELD

Germany's largest rhododendron park (70ha) goes back to an initiative of D. G. Hobbie (1899–1985), who started to sub-plant a pinewood with Alpine roses in 1937. By now the Linsweger Rhododendron-Forest-Park has developed into an important meeting point for the international garden world. From end-April to mid-June several hundred cultivations and over 200 wild species enchant the forest with its colourful flowerage and surprise even the most discerning garden friend. Small paths and trails with a length of around 8 km allow hour-long walks between cushion-forming high-altitude rhododendrons and strong-growing forms.

RHODODENDRON PARK GRISTEDE

The history of the rhododendron park Gristede goes back to the brothers Erich and Wilhelm Bruns. In 1950 they started to built up a systematic collection of colourful alpine roses and outdoor azaleas in the light shadow of a pinewood. Today more than 800 different species can be admired here.
The collection is being enriched by several Japanese maple, witch hazel and magnolia species as well as a picturesque pond in the shade of Chinese redwood trees. The exhibited novelties show a trend and show the capabilities of the Ammerländer nurseries.
Guided tours for groups are possible. Information and booking via Touristic Wiefelstede, Tel.: 04402 96901

THE MAXWALD-PARK

The Maxwald-Park is enchanting in any season — through the charm of an English park as well as the fascinating atmosphere of Asian nature presentations.
The park goes back to the year 1824 and has been complemented by a private collection of English rhododendron species since 1824. From end-April one can admire here the Himalaya-rhododendrons. In May follows the azalea blooms and the blossoms in the English rhododendron wood. In June the herb and rose garden are the centre, in late summer and autumn the hydrangea blossoms. The natural moos garden also has a unique effect.

KURPARK BAD ZWISCHENAHN

Situated directly at the Zwischenahner Meer the Kurpark's garden (3ha) and the banks' garden (11ha) are blooming. The garden goes back to the year 1929, when symmetrical paths and flower beds were formed to a spa garden at the smaller riparian strips. After 1950 this area was extended and recreated in a landscape style. The curved paths run through saturated peonies, corkscrew hazel and wild geraniums and open at several places picturesque views over the lake. After a stroll a resting seat in the Spieker's country garden seems alluring. The place is in Germany's oldest open-air museum.

SCHLOSSPARK RASTEDE UND PALAISGARTEN

The garden art enthusiast Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Oldenburg laid the foundation of the 330 hectare large Rasteder Park ensemble in 1777. The park sill exists today. The court gardener Carl Ferdinand Bosse planted an »accessible painting« in the style of an English country garden after plans by the duke. At that time one of the highlights was the start of the Ammerländer rhododendron cultivation. Still today borders a rhododendron wall, which grew to a tree height of 280 metre the backside of the palace area.
The hereditary prince palace, which is situated opposite the palace was purchased in 1822. It was then rebuilt and the garden little by little extended and merged to a harmonic park. Thanks to artistic park guidance and carefully composed sequence of tree and bush population, generous greens in part with exotic solitaires and small water bodies the palace garden is seen as a diverse and seemingly spacious landscape picture.
